How to Write a Consulting Brief That Doesn't Get Generic Pitches

The fastest way to get pitched a 40-page deck of generic corporate nonsense is to write a generic brief.

If you go to the market and say: *"We are a B2B SaaS company looking for a consultant to help us improve our Sales & Revenue Growth,"* you will attract people who deal in buzzwords.

Top-tier independent consultants are busy. They triage opportunities quickly. To get their attention, your brief needs three brutally honest sections: The Bleeding Neck, The Graveyard, and The Definition of Done.

1. The Bleeding Neck Don't describe your company's grand vision. Describe the exact mechanism that is currently broken and causing you pain.

Bad: "We need help optimizing our sales funnel." Good: "Our outbound SDRs are making 100 calls a day. Our connection rate is 15%, but our meeting booked rate is zero. We are burning ₹8L a month on SDR salaries with no pipeline to show for it."

2. The Graveyard of Past Attempts Consultants hate coming in and suggesting something you already tried two years ago. Save everyone time by listing the corpses.

Example: "We already tried buying a new predictive dialer. It didn't change the outcome. We hired a sales trainer in January who changed the script, but reps reverted to the old script within two weeks because the new one felt unnatural to Indian buyers."

3. The Definition of Done If you don't define what success looks like, the consultant will define it for you,usually as "delivering a strategic roadmap."

You don't want a roadmap. You want an outcome.

Example: "This engagement is successful if, at the end of 8 weeks, we have a rewritten, culturally-nuanced sales playbook, our SDRs have been actively coached on the phones, and we are booking 3 meetings per rep per week."
